In the 1960's Laurence Olivier, together with Noel Coward and Richard Attenborough had the idea of promoting a single annual fund-raising event for all the theatrical charities. The Council was formed as an independent body to co-ordinate the work of the Member Charities and attract donations and legacies for their benefit, in addition to centralising appeals for funds which can in turn be applied where most needed by the member Charities.
Commencing in 2003, with the support of the leading theatrical bodies of the Theatre Managers Association, the Society of London Theatre and Equity, performers on stages around the UK were invited to make a curtain call appeal. During a specified week each year, audiences are asked by performers Acting For Others to assist with a collection in aid of their less fortunate colleagues.

Commencing October 15th, in most theatres around the country we are joining with our fellow performers to make a special appeal to you our audience. For every successful actor there are hundreds of ex performers, including backstage and theatre staff, who are not so fortunate. They may suffer from cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's or have just become too old or ill to earn a living ; some with disabilities, some with young children. Many in our profession lend their support to other good causes but like other professions we also try to take care of our own.
Will you kindly help us to do so by contributing to the collection that follows? Any contribution you make will be shared amongst all the Combined Theatrical Charities who share the burden of care of hundreds of sad cases. Thank you.
